The Ladies Auxiliary….A Brief History
On February 17, 1932, a special meeting was held for the purpose of forming an auxiliary to the Old Bridge Volunteer Fire Company. The first officers of the Ladies’ Auxiliary were: Mrs. Squires, President; Mrs. Bowne, Vice President; Mrs. Kelly, Secretary; and Miss Preston, Treasurer. These women, along with a small membership, held fundraising activities to purchase equipment for the original firehouse and made donations to the Fire Company for expenses.
No other Auxiliary records are available until 1945, when the Auxiliary was reorganized. The fundraising activities were many, including bingos, fairs, rummage sales, variet shows and selling many different types of merchandise. The band was also sponsored by the Auxiliary, as was sending packages to the servicemen, and making their own uniforms. Once again, the funds realized from all the women’s endeavors went for equipping the firehouse, firefighting equipment, and donations to the fuel oil bills for the firehouse.
A membership drive was started in 1961. The response was good and the women moved ahead with new ideas. In 1962, the Ladies’ Auxiliary donated $3000.00 to help equip the kitchen at the new Pine Street Firehouse. Twice a year, a home-style, all you can eat, roast beef dinner was prepared by the women and served by the men at the Pine Street firehouse. This dinner became the major fundraiser of the Auxiliary and the reputation of good food and service was constantly growing. The Ladies’ Auxiliary also had a stand at the Annual Middlesex County Fair.
From the very beginning to the present day, the object of the Ladies Auxiliary is to promote the welfare of the Fire Company and fellowship among members and create a feeling of goodwill.
