Unit : Unit 711
Year : 1995
Model : Ford F-350
In the fall of 1994, it became apparent that vehicle #712 the 1983 GMC 1 ton pick-up truck, had begun to show its age mechanically. The truck had been purchased for paper drives, which we discontinued, but was then used extensively for other department business which seemed to increase every year.
A committee was formed and a 1995 FORD F-350 4x4 crew cab, 1 ton pick-up truck was selected on the New Jersey State Vehicle Contract. It was outfitted by department members and was assigned the unit number 712. It was then housed at the Civic Center Fire House. This vehicle would spend the next 18 years with us.
Ford Motor Company’s Style-side pick-up truck line was long considered one of the best model trucks built by Ford. When this vehicle reached its replacement age in 2004, we decided to retain it, along with the new pick-up, to give both stations a utility vehicle. With the amount of company business, department projects, fire school travel, fire prevention functions, and down time on apparatus maintenance and repair, the truck was still needed. We ran it another nine years as Vehicle #711.
When the 2011Ford F-350 pick-up truck arrived, Vehicle 711was completely re-lettered by Agin Signs and re-numbered to Vehicle #708. We put a set of Ford factory aluminum rims on and used it as a chief’s vehicle for several months while we began the process of re-painting, and re-wiring the our 2007 Chevy Tahoe chief’s car, that was not initially installed properly.
Soon after, the transmission started slipping on this truck and the engine was mis-firing. We retired the truck in December of 2012. It was given to the Spotswood Fire Department. It currently sits behind their station un-used.
